Co-Presidents
Collaborative, Visionary, Empowered.
For QPLS this year, we hope to facilitate and create a positive environment within the Executive Team, General Members, and the broader Queen’s community. We aim to foster stronger relationships with individuals and groups as a connection both as we look to connect with more Queen’s and external organizations to build a strong foundation for QPLS amongst the Queen’s student body for years to come. This year, we will focus on accountability, accessibility, and transparency within QPLS. We want the work that we do while trying to support budding legal minds to be accessible to all and to improve where needed continuously.
Marketing
Strategic, Creative, Persuasive.
The Marketing Team at Queen's Pre-Law Society is dedicated to ensuring that our valued general members and students with an interest in the legal domain remain well-informed about all club activities. In the current year, our team is fully committed to to maintaining a regimen of consistent communication, conceptualizing innovative initiatives across diverse media platforms, overseeing the development of our new official website, executing timely event notifications, and introducing new themed posts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to guarantee comprehensive participation and help our members become more prepared to enter the legal realm. Collectively, our team strives to cultivate beautiful, inclusive, safe, and inviting presences across all of our media platforms to appeal to potential new members, and please our current ones.
Events
Organized, Dynamic, Engaging.
Welcome to the incredible world of our law club's Events Team! We are a passionate and dedicated group of individuals who breathe life into the club's vision. With each passing day, we strive to create extraordinary experiences that leave an indelible mark on our members and the wider legal community. Our yearly tasks revolve around orchestrating a dynamic array of events that transcend the ordinary. From thought-provoking panel discussions featuring prominent legal luminaries to exhilarating Mock Trial competitions that sharpen our members' advocacy skills, we curate a diverse range of activities that nurture knowledge, camaraderie, and personal growth. Our ultimate goal is to foster a vibrant and inclusive community within the law club. We aim to inspire our members to pursue excellence, uphold justice, and positively impact the world. By organizing networking sessions with seasoned professionals, we pave the way for invaluable mentorship opportunities and career advancement. Through our endeavors, we aim to instill a sense of purpose, resilience, and empathy in every member, empowering them to become compassionate leaders of tomorrow's legal landscape. Together, we embark on a journey of growth, innovation, and empowerment, united in our pursuit of justice and bound by the common thread of passion for the law. Join us on this remarkable adventure, where possibilities are limitless and dreams take flight. Together, we shape the future of law and humanity.
Outreach
Proactive, Inclusive, Supportive.
The Outreach Portfolio facilitates relationships with partner organizations and businesses, runs the Mentorship Program, and maintains the QPLS blog—overseeing a team of four writers and editing legal articles. This year, we are expanding the Mentorship Program and are currently recruiting law school students to become mentors for undergraduate students seeking insight and support with navigating the post-graduate legal realm. As well, we will be holding an information session for students interested in becoming General Members and seeing all of the benefits that QPLS has to offer for the 2023-2024 year. This year we are excited to have a new blog—thanks to our Marketing portfolio—on which we will manage the Queen’s Pre-Law Society Blog. The Blog will be a place for undergraduate writers to explore diverse topics through a legal lens. The submitted articles can range from the legalities of renting to the violations of international laws by global companies. We are looking for talented writers who can contribute one article per month for the duration of the academic year. If interested, further information about the Blog will be coming out on our Instagram profile. Furthermore, if capacity permits, we are looking to print and compile a select amount of published Blog posts and distribute them across the university.
Fundraising
Resourceful, Driven, Charitable.
The fundraising team strives to strengthen and diversify our relationships this year by partnering with Raven - a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing access to justice for Indigenous Nations across Canada. We hope to educate the Queen’s community on the importance of supporting the rights of Indigenous Peoples as it is a pathway toward reconciliation and environmental justice. Through supporting Raven, we aim to enhance student engagement through various upcoming fundraising events and initiatives. The portfolio works together as a team to coordinate the details of event planning by reaching out to various QPLS portfolios, partnerships, and local businesses for support. Fundraising specifically works closely with the logistics, events, and marketing portfolios to ensure an organized execution of all affairs.
Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, & Indigenization (EDI+I)
Equitable, Diverse, Respectful.
The EDI+I (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion + Indigenization) portfolio ensures that QPLS remains a safe, accessible, and inclusive space for all its Executive and General Members. It is responsible for developing and upholding an EDI+I foundation and ethos within the organization, as well as holding the club and those a part of it accountable for staying informed about EDI+I-related issues within legal topics to educate ourselves and others. The EDI+I portfolio strives to highlight the experiences and realities of marginalized groups and amplify the voices of traditionally underrepresented demographics. During the 2023/24 academic year, the EDI+I team strives to develop several internal and external resources to promote equity and inclusivity within the club. This will include integrating land acknowledgements in all QPLS-related correspondence and events, an accessibility and inclusivity event checklist, and alt text for social media posts. Additionally, the team looks forward to introducing coffee chats to promote casual and open dialogue regarding EDI+I and the law. People of all backgrounds, experiences, and degrees of knowledge on the topic will be welcome for a place to listen, self-educate, and discuss.
Logistics
Efficient, Coordinated, Reliable.
The main tasks that logistics takes on is booking event spaces and meeting rooms while coordinating with other portfolios to ensure that the club goals are met efficiently and effectively. More specifically, the logistics portfolio has been working hard to create a bi-weekly newsletter for general members. This newsletter will capture all important events, socials, gatherings and fundraisers. In addition to circulating the newsletter, the logistics portfolio is responsible for organizing the executive team calendar and email. General membership applications will open in August and will remain open through September. Most recently, logistics has scheduled our attendance at this year's Tri-Colour Open House, ASUS Sidewalk Sale and Queen's in the Park.
Finance
Analytical, Strategic, Transparent.
The Queen’s Pre-Law Society finance portfolio is in charge of monitoring, approving, planning, and budgeting all incoming and outgoing financial transactions within the club. The finance portfolio is essential in ensuring that the Queen’s Pre-Law Society maintains a healthy account which will sustain our club for years to come. Additionally, the esteemed directors are responsible for applying for prestigious club grants and drafting reports to the Queen’s Clubs Commission to ensure the society can host larger events with higher costs for the Queen’s community. These responsibilities require multiple meetings a week to ensure that timelines are met and that our finances are well-tracked and organized. Our overall goal is to efficiently provide our society with the maximum resources possible to fund amazing initiatives for fellow prospective law students. One of our main goals for this year includes raising the starting balance for next year’s executive team so that our society can continue to evolve and prosper.
